Axios|SurveyMonkey poll: broadband and the digital divide

A majority of people pay for television at home, but most would love to cut the cord--if only they could get faster, cheaper, or more reliable internet. New polling from Axios and SurveyMonkey shows:

  • Nationwide, 68 percent of people subscribe to broadband internet service.
  • Top reasons for not having broadband internet at home include: having a smartphone lets you do everyone online you need to do (24 percent), the monthly cost of home broadband service is too expensive (20 percent), and there are other options for internet access outside of home (14 percent).
  • Those in rural areas are the most likely to say they don’t have enough options for broadband internet (53 percent) and the least likely to be happy with the options they do have (33 percent).
  • Despite their dissatisfaction with broadband options, most people (55 percent) still want private industry to be responsible for providing high-speed internet products where it makes sense to do so, rather than relying on the government to ensure that high speed internet is available to all (40 percent).
  • Two-thirds of people (67 percent) pay for cable or satellite television, but 77 percent say they would give it up if they had faster, cheaper, or more reliable internet service.
  • Nearly eight in 10 people (79 percent) say their internet is fast enough at home to allow them to stream TV shows or videos over the internet without disruption.
