As the UK moves to a low-carbon economy, the way we operate the electricity system is evolving. A smart, flexible system that makes the best use of all the energy resources available will enable us to meet our customers’ needs in a balanced, efficient and economical way.
Our aim is to create balancing services markets that meet our changing system needs and in which all technology types can compete on a level playing field. To achieve this we will provide market information that plainly sets out our needs, simplify our products to create transparency and ensure routes to market for all participants.
About this consultation
Our System Needs and Product Strategy report is intended to give more information on our future system needs and to consult on how we can best facilitate the evolution of future balancing services markets.
The report provides a summary of key future system needs, explains how these needs are currently met and outlines potential improvements that could be made. It also provides details of the steps we will take to review the way we procure balancing services, a number of alternative approaches for the future and sets the questions for this consultation.
The report can be downloaded from our Future of Balancing Services web page and it is important that you read it before you participate in the consultation.
The consultation aims to help us collect feedback from all market participants and understand your views on the evolution of our future balancing services markets. We would welcome engagement and input from a wide range of organisations, with the potential to arrange follow-up phone interviews or face to face consultation, with those parties that would be interested to engage further.
The closing date for the consultation is 18 July 2017.
All information provided will be treated by National Grid as confidential and will only be used for the purposes of this consultation.
