Authors' unions the Society of Authors (SoA) and the Writers' Guild of Great Britain (WGGB) are committed to ensuring that authors are paid fairly for their work. This is more important than ever when a publisher asks you to pay upfront for its services before your work is published.

These agreements are often called 'contributory', 'subsidy', 'partnership' or 'hybrid' publishing deals, and we are concerned that many of them aren't clear or fair. We are receiving increasing numbers of complaints from authors who have agreed such deals without a proper understanding of what they are being asked to pay for and why.
