Scope 3 emissions reporting with respect to social care |
Introduction
Local Partnerships developed a greenhouse gas accounting tool in collaboration with the LGA in 2020. This is free for all councils to download and can be found here. Greenhouse Gas Accounting Tool - Local Partnerships. We have now been commissioned to carry out a further piece of work to develop guidance to councils on Scope 3 emissions reporting with respect to social care.
Emissions are broken down into three categories by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol in order to better understand the source.
Scope 1 – All Direct Emissions from the activities of an organisation or under their control, including fuel combustion in its own properties and fleet vehicles
Scope 2 – Indirect Emissions from electricity purchased and used by the organisation; those emissions created during the production of the energy
Scope 3 – All Other Indirect Emissions from activities of the organisation, occurring from sources that they do not own or control. These are usually the greatest share of the carbon footprint, covering emissions associated with business travel, procurement, waste and water.
We are seeking input from social care practitioners/commissioners from councils to gather data to help inform the guidance as to the key sources and barriers to data collection.
