Physical Energy Surrey Residents Consultation
Dear Surrey Resident,
Our vision is to use G F Watts’s Physical Energy as a major piece of public art that will stand as a beacon for creativity.
To mark the bicentenary of the birth of George Frederic Watts, OM, RA (1817 – 1904), who in his own lifetime was widely considered to be one the world’s greatest artists, Watts Gallery Trust has commissioned a new bronze cast of the artist’s renowned public sculpture, Physical Energy.
The Trust is seeking to site the new cast on the hillside adjoining the A3, on the edge of the Artists’ Village founded by G F and Mary Watts in 1890 here in Compton. Physical Energy would be the first public art installation on this major route through our county.
G F Watts firmly believed in Art for All, the concept that access to great art could bring immense benefits to society. Physical Energy was the culmination of this belief, created without specific reference to any individual as a gift to the nation. Watts declared it to be “a symbol of that restless physical impulse to seek the still unachieved.”
Our county leads the way in many fields, including technology, business and industry. To celebrate Surrey’s unique spirit, Watts Gallery Trust is seeking to site Physical Energy in the public realm for all to experience and enjoy.
We welcome your feedback on our proposed location below.
