In the run up to the closure of The Abbey Care Home last year, there was an outpouring of community support for The Abbey as a local institution.
Of the people who responded to the consultation on closure, 83% did not want the care home to close, and 88% said they wanted a mix of residential care and extra care to continue on the site.
The unfortunate decision to close was made anyway, on the grounds that Cumbria County Council are investing in provision of care for the frail elderly at other larger sites, in other parts of Cumbria, as well as helping people to stay well at home for longer.
They have not been able to find a partner to offer a new service here and have come back to village representatives recently, to see what the community wants to do now.
The site will be sold soon and the County would look favourably on a community proposal to buy the site.
The Abbey Development Group has been asked by the Parish Council to find out the views of the residents on future use of The Abbey site.
