Mind’s Media Team works closely with people with mental health problems, helping them share their experiences, for example in newspapers and online, TV and radio. We are committed to working with a diverse range of media volunteers, but have historically underserved Black and Asian communities. We would like to do better and do more to support and represent Black, Asian and Mixed Race people.

This survey will help us to better understand why and how we have underserved these groups, and what we can do to better engage with people from these ethnicities, to ensure we are representing the reality of mental health and all of us affected.

It is up to you whether you want to take part in this survey. All answers will be treated in confidence and they will not affect the care you receive. If you start the questionnaire and then change your mind about participating, you can stop at any time.

Please do not write your name, address or any other personal details on this questionnaire. The survey findings will be shared within the organisation of Mind only. However, your answers will remain anonymous – no one will know who has said what.

What is media volunteering?

Media volunteers are extremely important to Mind’s work. Journalists from a huge variety of media are often looking to interview people with particular experiences of mental health problems. The Media team at Mind therefore holds a number of contacts who can help with these requests – these are our media volunteers.

Our media volunteers are people with lived experiences of mental health problems who are happy to be called upon to share their story with the media. This might mean taking a phone interview with a journalist for a print newspaper, supplying a quote for a press release, right through to appearing on live television.

There’s never any obligation to take on an interview and it’s not a formal volunteering position that requires a set time dedication.
