The health board is developing a 10 year Clinical Services Strategy (‘the strategy’) which will outline the longer-term vision for health services in Cwm Taf. This will be influenced and informed by discussions with our staff, patients, carers, local communities and our partner organisations.

It is important to remember that we are not starting from scratch. The health board has a strong and proud reputation for service delivery and improvement. We will build on work that has already begun such as:
  • the redesign of mental health services which has enabled us to provide more services in the community as opposed to a hospital setting
  • developing plans for a new Paediatric, Obstetric & Neonatal Unit at Prince Charles Hospital
  • investment in a new Diagnostics Hub at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital which will increase the number of MRI and CT scans we can provide from November 2017
  • new GP cluster networks where GPs provide services that traditionally may have been provided in a hospital setting
  • the creation of new health parks at Keir Hardie and Dewi Sant allowing us to provide health, social care and voluntary sector services from one building.
In developing the strategy, it is important for the health board to review:
  • what services could look like across primary, community and secondary care in the future
  • the workforce that will be required to deliver those services
  • how we can work more closely with our partners in social services and the voluntary sector
  • quality and safety of services
  • the sustainability and affordability of services
Our aim is that services are delivered as close to home possible. When developing the strategy we will look at what services could be provided:
  • At GP practice level
  • At health park or community hospital level
  • At both District General Hospitals (i.e. the Royal Glamorgan and Prince Charles Hospitals)
  • Or centralised at one District General Hospital (e.g. breast services)
The principles of innovation, quality and access to services will underpin the development of the strategy.
