Notes for presenters

Thank you for your interest in presenting at the Historical Association Annual Conference 2021, which will provisionally take place in Bristol on 14-15 May 2021.

Please read these notes carefully and then complete the form overleaf, giving details of your proposed session for the conference. If you are an historian wishing to present a lecture in our General or Walks and Visits streams, please contact Rebecca Sullivan at

The deadline for submissions is Monday 16 November 2020 at 5.00pm.
We continue to monitor guidance around Covid-19 and follow government, WHO and public health advice. With this at the forefront of any decision, at the time of releasing this call for papers (September 2020) we expect to be able to hold the HA Conference in Bristol in May 2021.  The feedback from members is that they would be keen to attend such an event and bookings and interest remain high.

We are actively looking at guidance on health and safety around the event to ensure that delegates, speakers and staff can be confident that the event is held in a safe and secure environment. It means that we may need to put in place additional measures to ensure that the conference remains a vibrant but educationally stimulating event, while maintaining social distance and public health standards.

Should a change in circumstances necessitate moving the conference online in May we would look to do so, as is planned for November 2020. If your session is selected for the programme you will be contacted about this with sufficient notice.

Submitting a proposal
We will be in touch towards the end of the year to let you know if your session will be included in the conference programme and to ask for further information for the conference programme. Please be aware that a submission does not guarantee a place.

Funding and additional presenters
The Historical Association is a charity and therefore is only in a position to fund expenses for one presenter per session as standard. This includes a waiver of your fees to attend the conference and reimbursement of travel expenses to Bristol up to  a maximum of £50.00. Please be aware that the following stipulations apply:-
  • For those speaking on behalf of organisations: The HA will cover your conference fees to attend both days of the conference. Your organisation is expected to fund your travel, accommodation and place at Annual Dinner (should you wish to attend). 
  • For those in higher education: The HA will cover your conference fees to attend both days of the conference. We would be grateful if you could approach your university to cover your travel and accommodation costs as part of their outreach and impact agenda.
  • For those in school or freelance: The HA will cover your conference fees to attend both days of the conference. Funding will include travel expenses up to £50.00. If necessary you will also be provided with one night’s accommodation at the conference hotel.
We are able to review requests on a case-by-case basis, so if you wish to present a joint workshop please contact Maheema Chanrai using the details below prior to engaging a second presenter. Note that if you agree to present more than one workshop we will be more likely to agree to this.

Additional presenters will not be funded unless agreed with the HA beforehand and are expected to cover their own conference fees (at concessionary rate), accommodation and travel costs.
Workshop timing
Sessions must stick to a maximum running time, including room set-up/clear-up and questions, of 55 minutes.

The HA is unable to endorse any profit-making organisations at conference. As such, there is a strict no advertising policy. This includes in handouts, PowerPoints and any other resources. For organisations wishing to promote themselves, please contact Sarah Byrne at Mosaic Events at

Data protection
We collect your personal data in order to communicate with you regarding your proposal to present at the Historical Association Annual Conference 2021. If your proposal is selected, your information will be shared with Mosaic Events in order to process your conference booking. We have deemed this to represent legitimate interest in line with the ICO's guidance.  Your information will be kept with us for up to a year after the Annual Conference 2020.
