Thank you for expressing an interest in becoming a trainer or host farm for the Wales Future Farmer Horticulture Training Programme for the 2022 season. This programme is part of Resilient Green Spaces, a £1.27m partnership project being led by Social Farms & Gardens to pilot alternative re-localised food systems using communities and their green spaces as the driving force for change across Wales until June 2023.  Click here to learn more about this project.

The programme is a 2 year pilot horticulture training scheme aimed at assisting new entrant growers in developing the skills needed to run a horticultural farming business. The first year saw ten trainees complete eight training webinars, four on-farm study weekends and a number of peer to peer networking opportunities.
 
We are now recruiting farms, growers and trainers to assist with the second year of delivery. 
 
Opportunities for farms, growers and trainers
 
We have up to 12 fully funded spaces available on the Wales Future Farmer Horticulture Training Programme, for new entrant trainees. If your farm/horticulture enterprise is recruiting trainees for the 2022 season and you feel they would benefit from this additional learning, we want to hear from you!

In addition to us supporting your trainees, we have paid opportunities for experienced growers who are able to deliver horticulture training or assist with the delivery of the programme.

Farm employing a trainee - We require farms and horticultural enterprises across Wales to put their 2022 trainee/s forward for the Wales Future Farmer Horticulture Training Programme. This programme supplements the on farm day to day learning that you will be delivering. 

Trainers - We require a number of experienced growers and educators to deliver both online and in person learning on key topics such as propagation, crop planning, fertility building, pest and disease management, business planning etc. Trainers do not have to be growers or part of a horticultural enterprise, but rather able to deliver their chosen subject in a professional capacity to a level appropriate to new entrant trainees

Host farm - We are after 4 farms as a 'base' for trainee learning weekends. We will require facilities for up to 14 trainees to camp (they will bring own equipment), food and drink to be provided, and a space for a training workshop. A farm tour during the stay would be valuable. Please note: host farms do not have to have a trainee on the programme but experience with trainees/volunteers would be great.
 
Study visits - As part of the training weekends the trainees visit 2 - 3 farms to gain a better understanding of how different agroecological horticulture businesses are managed. These visits generally include a farm tour and an informal chat with the grower/s.
