1. About the role

As an English-Speaking Union (ESU) Mentor or Mace Judge you'll have the opportunity to deliver oracy, debating and public speaking workshops in schools, act as a judge for our prestigious Schools' Mace debating competition; and/or support participants during ESU residential programmes. You will also have the opportunity to judge other ESU competitions or act as a Zoom Host for some of our online activity (some on a voluntary basis).

These are paid opportunities unless otherwise specified.  

As an ESU Mentor you will support the delivery of the following:
  • Full day and half day workshops, such as Discover Your Voice 
  • Competitions, such as Schools' Mace 
  • Week-long projects such as Debate Academy, our residential summer school 
There may also be the opportunity to contribute towards our growing webinar and online network presence, as well as attend other events at our headquarters, Dartmouth House.

What do we expect from our Mentors?

Essential criteria
  1. Experience of teaching or coaching young people of any age group
  2. Good level of oracy and experience with activities that develop these skills; i.e. debating, public speaking and/or performance
  3. A passion for education, social mobility and/or developing young people's oracy skills
  4. Over 18 years of age and have the right to work in the UK/EA
  5. Commitment to work for the ESU for at least the academic year 2022/23
  6. Able to deliver workshops in schools during term time and typical office hours
  7. Be based in England or Wales for the 2022/23 academic year 
  8. Have access to a vehicle or willing to travel by public transport
  9. Be confident with technology, especially Zoom
Desirable criteria
  1. Experience of teaching or coaching debating, public speaking or oracy skills
  2. Experience working, volunteering or participating in ESU programmes and/or competitions
  3. Knowledge of the UK education system
How will we support you?
  • Ongoing professional development and support managed by an assigned regional ambassador
  • We cover the cost of a Child Protection Level 2 qualification (for those attending Debate Academy) and an Enhanced DBS Disclosure 
  • You will work within a large network of highly-trained educators that supports peer-to-peer learning, with multiple avenues for professional development
