Pharmacy Workforce Plan Feedback 2023

Quality healthcare is based on a number of key foundations; including its workforce. Locally, nationally, and internationally pharmacy is challenged by workforce constraints. A pharmacy workforce includes pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and support staff.

Hawkes Bay has a great opportunity to develop a workforce plan to:

o Promote pharmacy as a career to ensure a diverse workforce

o Promote Hawkes Bay as a training and work destination

o Ensure our pharmacy workforce are happy and thriving at work

o Expand our strong professional development programme to include leadership and governance.

All Hawkes Bay pharmacists and pharmacy staff are invited to join the journey to collaboratively plan how our local pharmacy workforce will be developed to provide all pharmacy needs for our community.

* 1. Draft Workforce Development Plan.

My thoughts on the Plan's draft objectives are:
Our draft objectives are:
1. Co-design, and implement, a local pharmacy workforce plan.
2. Pharmacy services have the skilled pharmacist resource that they require to deliver quality care
3. Pharmacists skills are maximised, including developing advanced roles, across the health system e.g. increase the number of pharmacist prescribers*
4. Unregulated pharmacy workforce skills are maximised across the pharmacy workforce, including developing advanced roles e.g. increase of PACTs*
5. Hawke’s Bay focuses on the key areas that they can control, but works to influence areas beyond.
6. Hawke’s Bay is a pharmacy workforce training and development destination.

My thoughts on the Plan's draft outcomes are:
Our draft outcomes are:
1. Te Matau a Māui Hawkes Bay pharmacy workforce take collective responsibility to ensure our district has the pharmacy workforce needed.
2. Our pharmacy workforce has the capability and capacity to provide high-quality care (adapted from NZ Health Strategy 2016)
3. Our pharmacy workforce is used in the most effective and flexible way, as members of an integrated service. (adapted from NZ Health Strategy 2016)
4. The pharmacy workforce develops leadership, talent and workforce skills throughout the system. (adapted from NZ Health Strategy)
5. The pharmacy workforce has a high level of well-being and is diverse; reflecting the population of Te Matau a Māui Hawkes Bay.

My thoughts on the Plan's draft scope are:
Our draft scope is:
1. In scope: Within Te Matau a Māui Hawke’s Bay district: Pharmacy workforce includes Pharmacists, Pharmacy technicians, Pharmacy assistants, and advanced practice roles (unregulated and regulated workforce)
2. Out of scope: pharmacy delivery drivers, non-pharmacy related retail staff e.g. Post Shop, photography

My thoughts on the Steering Group membership are:
Our draft membership is: Consumer representative, Pharmacy owner(s), Pacific representation, System Lead for Medicines, Maori representation, Advanced scope technician, PSNZ branch president, Advanced scope assistant, Hospital clinical team leader, CPF team educator, HHB Clinical Director, PF&P GP Liaison.
