Study title: Anti-fraud tools in the UK food manufacturing industry

You are invited to take part in an online survey. Before you decide whether or not to take part, it is important for you to understand why the research is being done and what it will involve. Please take time to read the following information carefully.

What is the purpose of the study?
The aim of this project is to establish a database on the different types of anti-fraud tools that are currently being used within the UK food industry and to understand their effectiveness in preventing food fraud.

Why have I been invited to participate?
As a UK based food manufacturer, your response is important for us to understand the types of anti-fraud tools used by the industry and to provide insights into the effectiveness of food fraud assessments in preventing, detecting and/or reacting to food frauds.

Do I have to take part?
It is up to you to decide whether or not to take part. If you do decide to take part you will be asked to confirm your consent by reading the study terms and conditions and clicking on ‘I agree to participate in the online survey’. If you decide to take part you are still free to withdraw at any time and without giving a reason, however once you have completed and submitted your survey it will be impossible to identify any one single individual and therefore it will not be possible to remove it. Any data that you do give will be anonymous, will be kept securely on the university network for up to 5 years and will be password protected.

What will happen to me if I take part?
You will be directed to an online survey which will ask a series of open and closed questions on (i) demographic characteristics; (ii) food fraud assessments and tools used;  (iii) knowledge and perceptions of food fraud risk assessments and (iv) willingness to participate in interview stage.

If you would like a copy of the findings, please contact the researchers by email directly. (All responses are kept anonymous and the only way for us to share the findings with you is if you indicate your interest directly to us).

What are the possible benefits of taking part?
This research, if successful, could help to shape future approaches to food fraud vulnerability assessments and highlight areas of opportunity for improved tools and training.

What are the possible risks of taking part?
No risks to individuals who consent to take part have been identified.

Will what I say in this study be kept confidential?
All information collected are anonymous and will be kept strictly confidential (subject to legal limitations). Confidentiality, privacy and anonymity will be ensured in the collection, storage and publication of research material.

What should I do if I want to take part?
Go through the consent statements below and tick the ‘I agree to participate’ box.

What will happen to the results of the research study?
The results of the study will be prepared and submitted to a peer-reviewed journal for publication. The findings will also be disseminated at relevant food safety and integrity conference.

Who is organising and funding the research?
This research is organised by the Faculty of Health and Wellbeing, University of Central Lancashire. We did not receive any funding for this research.
