Journal Publishing Policy on Material Derived from Open Access Electronic Theses

Background

It is increasingly the case that open access to research outputs, includes open access to electronic theses. A large number of UK universities now require PhD students to submit an electronic copy of their theses and to grant open access rights (though restrictions may be requested). The University of Surrey is no exception in this regard.

A number of concerns have since arisen, however, concerning the effect open access e-theses (OAETs) have on future publishing opportunities, and specifically whether or not OAETs - and thus the material therein - are considered 'pre-published'. Though there have been a number of studies premised on survey's similar to this one, we are looking to gain an up-to-date understanding of current publishing trends and policies concerning the publication of journal articles containing material derived from OAETs. We intend to share our findings with other universities, in order to assist them in devising their own e-theses policies.
