Introduction

The UK Government has committed to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050. This will require a transformation in many sections of our society and economy. To make this transformation successful it will need to be underpinned by a workforce equipped with low-carbon and sustainability skills and knowledge. It is therefore critical to gain an understanding of any skills deficits and priorities for upskilling and reskilling.

We recognise that there is a level of ambiguity surrounding the use of the term net zero. For the purposes of this survey we are referring to net zero as achieving a society which balances the greenhouse gases put into the atmosphere and those taken out.

This survey seeks to find out member views on net zero ambitions and the skills that will be needed to deliver them. Survey responses will be used to guide IES activity in the area of skills support and in the production of a briefing as part of our work on the STAGES on the road to COP26
