Old Town Community Council needs your views on which of the points under each of our four goals, are most important to you. Please tell us which points are most (and least) important to you.

Question Title

* 1. We want to reduce late night disturbance in Old Town between 23:00 and 06:00. This is to help residents and visitors get a better night’s sleep. Please tell us which of these cause the most (1) and least (4) disturbance for you.

Licensed businesses including those who leave doors open in summer

Caterers who remain open until the early hours

Construction sites, trade waste vehicles and unattended alarms.

Fireworks and other noisy entertainment eg rock concert

* 2. We want Walkable Streets. In other words, we want moving around Old Town to be easier for residents, workers and visitors. Which of the following, will most (1) and least (9) help make our streets more Walkable?

Policing the A-Board and street-advertising bans

Limiting walking groups to 20 guests, in the interests of public and employee safety

Increasing the frequency of ‘Open-Streets’

Hop-on Hop-off buses made available to workers and residents with bus passes

Improving air quality throughout the city centre

Businesses and suppliers to park legally, avoiding pavements, double yellow lines and residents’ parking spaces

Non-residents to opt for public transport rather than cars

Adequate public transport provision for residents

Priority of pedestrians over cyclists

* 3. We want to restore the balance between tourists having fun and the needs of residents. Please tell us, which of the following points are most (1) to least (14) likely to achieve this.

Ban ‘Silent’ discos

Ban rickshaws

Ban stag and hen nights.

Ban amplified street buskers

Strict regulation of short -term lets for a 45 day limit per annum on whole house and short term lets, public registration and a greater contribution to Council tax. Support for Place organisation.

Visitors to Edinburgh, spend more time outside the Old Town

Reduce air travel into Edinburgh, especially for short breaks

An assessment of new planning permissions in support of social housing and long term sustainability rather than more hotels and short term accommodation

More balanced management of the Festivals especially the Fringe to move from measuring success by an increase on year on year tickets sold to a better experience for workers and visitors.

Introduce a quality assurance scheme for Fringe, Comedy, Music and other entertainment venues

Increase the number and variety of local food shops, independent speciality shops and genuine ‘made in Scotland’ retailers

A reduction in the use of Princes Street Gardens for large, commercial events including public access to East Princes St 365 days a year and to all of West Princes St Gardens 335 days a year

No commercial events in areas where residents live, such as the Royal Mile, Grassmarket and George IV Bridge.

Support the cultural institutions of the Old Town

* 4. We want to be heard by businesses, Councillors, officials and stakeholders and to increase our dialogue with other residents. Can you tell us which of the following points are most (1) and least (4) likely to help us achieve this goal?

We shall increase engagement with residents prior to OTCC responding to planning applications, licensing applications and consultations.

We shall adopt a programme of student outreach, welcoming students to become more committed to the Old Town community.

We want the licensing process to be completely transparent and accessible to all including letting.

We require that proposed developers demonstrate how they are committed to restoring and maintaining listed buildings appropriately.
