Currently the Students’ Union has 8 Part Time Officers who work to represent students from different demographic or liberation groups or on a particular issue. Following a review of our democratic processes we are now suggesting replacing these with Networks which would be student led groups who also have a seat on the important meetings at the SU and ensure those students voices are heard. The proposal is to create the following networks:
  • Black Asian Minority Ethnic (BAME) Students
  • Mature Students
  • International Students
  • Student Disability
  • LGBTQ+ Students
  • Women’s
  • Postgraduate Students
The Welfare Officer Role would be taken up by a new Welfare Council and we are also looking at having a Green Network to cover sustainability. The proposed networks cover the current demographic groups covered by officer positions but we could also create others e.g. Commuter Students.

These Networks would be free and run a bit like societies:

  1. Provide social and welfare support to their member students;
  2. To campaign and raise awareness of issues that affect their members, both on campus and outside of it; and
  3. To represent their demographic group of students on Student Council
Please could you answer this short anonymous questionnaire to help us shape our representative structure?
