1. Beyond Policies and Procedures: Your Lived Experience

  • Over 18's only.
  • Only the high level findings of the survey will be made publicly available in line with data protection regulations. An anonymised dataset will be made available for future studies.
  • If you are able to answer this on behalf of a non-english speaking relative or friend, please do so.

This survey is conducted by Hands4Unity*, a local community group based in Drogheda, Louth, in partnership with Louth LEADER Partnership** and Innovating Communities***. The aim of this survey is to understand the lived experience of integration of the migrant community, and the first-generation****, into Irish society. We are trying to understand the lived experience from the perspective of migrants, their children and the Irish community.

Definition of Integration: 'The process by which migrants become accepted into society, both as individuals and as groups….[Integration] refers to a two-way process of adaptation by migrants and host societies…[and implies] consideration of the rights and obligations of migrants and host societies, of access to different kinds of services and the labour market, and of identification and respect for a core set of values that bind migrants and host communities in a common purpose.' (IOM, 2011)

In April 2021, the Louth LEADER Partnership selected the proposal submitted by the Hands4Unity group to take part in the Innovating Communities bank challenge to promote integration as one of its co-design thinking projects. Since the 26th of May, the group has participated in a weekly co-design training course in which they have used the Design Thinking process to develop ideas and methods of community engagement to pursue the aim of bringing people together to investigate a shared social concern and to design a solution.
