SmartCitiesWorld has teamed up with Fotech Solutions to find out a few things around the use of acoustic sensors within urban areas.  Firstly, we are keen to hear about urban priorities and funding options.  Secondly, we want to find out about possible acoustic applications.

Question Title

* 1. In your experience, which of the following are public authorities most willing to fund?

Don't know Unlikely Possible Probably Most likely Definitely
Technology to reduce congestion of roads
Protecting key assets from intrusion, theft or damage
Reducing injuries and deaths of people
Reducing emissions and improving air quality
Improvements to the efficiency of public transportation
Gaining insights in to the operation of the city to inform decision making

Question Title

* 2. What business model will city authorities use to access technology?

Don't know No, prefer alternatives Yes, but open to alternative proposals Yes this is the only way
Capex – Buy it and own it for life.
Lease/Rent – Pay monthly at a pre-agreed rate.
HaaS (Hardware as a Service)

Question Title

* 3. Distributed Acoustic Sensing technology could be deployed to tackle a number of challenges, but which of the following do you think is the biggest problem for cities? (perhaps consider the place in which you live or a city nearby)? Rank 1 to 5.

Question Title

* 4. Fotech's Distributed Acoustic Sensing technology turns fibre networks into lines of thousands of sensors. Score the following potential applications of Fotech's technology out of five in terms of levels of interest:

Don't know None A little Moderate High Very High!
Monitoring of the environment – noise/air quality
Monitoring and protection of pipelines
Monitoring and protection of power cables
Monitoring and protection of communication cables
Security of perimeters around key assets
Management of road traffic
Monitoring of rail infrastructure
Monitoring of pedestrian movements
Monitoring of bicycle journeys
Detection of Seismic and Microseismic activity
Monitoring of structural health – bridges, levees, buildings

Question Title

* 5. Score the value of each of these potential road traffic deployments to a city:

Don't know None A little Moderate High  Very high
Reduction of traffic congestion to improve journey times
Management of traffic to prioritise the journey of key services
Reduction of road accidents and deaths by improving safety
Improvement of air quality by reducing emissions (gases and particulates)
Insights in road usage and resilience – correlations to factors such as time, the weather, human events
Monitoring of road health – identification of defects
