Guiding Principles for Patient, Carer and Public Engagement

Please take a minute to look through the list of principles below about how people are engaged in the work of the NHS. We have created the list by looking at work done around the country and we are keen to work out which principles are the most important to people in Barking & Dagenham, Redbridge and Havering.

1. Involve people as early as possible

2. Help and support people to be able to get involved through support, training and information giving

3. Be open and honest about what is possible and what is not possible

4. Make it easier for people to take part. Identify barriers and remove them

5. Communicate clearly in easy to understand plain English

6. Go to where people are

7. Allow plenty of time for people to receive information, read it and respond to it

8. Work with relevant partner organisations so that peoples time is used effectively and efficiently and people are not asked the same questions more than once

10. Be accessible- the way you engage people should be tailored to the needs of the people you are trying to engage – ask people what will work best for them

11. Work hard to seek the views of people and communities who experience the greatest health inequalities and the poorest health outcomes

12. Be clear about why you are trying to engage people and who you are trying to engage

13. Listen and act on patient and carer feedback every step of the way

14. Learn and share lessons to improve the way people are involved

15. Base relationships on equality and respect: patients and the public have an equal voice to professionals

16. Use all the strengths and talents that people bring to the table

17. Respect and encourage different beliefs and opinions

18. Allocate appropriate resources and support so that engagement can be effective

19. Recognise and reward the contributions people make

20. Tell people how their involvement made a difference throughout the process and at the end
