South East Scotland Region

Background

The Region wants to increase the number of adults who can lead hillwalking activities to expand the programme available to our young members, primarily in the Scouts and Explorers.

If you are an adult member with some hillwalking experience who is interested in completing training and assessment for a T1 or T2 (summer) hillwalking permit, please complete this survey by 31st April to allow us to plan training later this year.

Additional Information

The training is likely to be similar to a course run this year by Craigalmond District, based on a residential weekend at Lochgoilhead for practical leadership skills training. The format is based on groups of six, spent outdoors with a professional instructor from the Centre, with attendees arriving on the Friday evening for two days of instruction with departure late on the Sunday afternoon. There will be a second similar assessment weekend early next year which will be scheduled following feedback from the training weekend.

The survey gives a number of potential dates in September and October for the training course. Please indicate all of the dates you can attend ( and indicate a preferred date if you have one in the comments section ). This will allow the date that  works for the majority to be selected.

The following links provide more information on the types of permit, and assessment criteria:

Supervisory Assessment

Experience - hillwalking

The assessment includes a review of your personal log of hillwalking experience, and it is recommended that start this now if you do not already keep a log.

If you would like to discuss any aspect please contact desc@craigalmond.org.uk

Experience - leadership/supervision of young people

Individuals also need to demonstrate the general experience, skills and judgement to take responsibility and lead a group of young people undertaking an adventurous activity. The District Commissioner will assess this before approving a permit.

Following this survey you will have the opportunity to reserve a place on the course, when your line manager will be asked to support your reservation and the application to SHQ for grant funding, confirming that you are  ready to act as Permit holder, and will have the opportunity to lead hillwalking activities in your Scouting role(s).

Please discuss these aspects with your line manager informally by the end of May, and advise desc@craigalmond.org.uk if you would prefer not to proceed at this point.

Next Steps

Everyone who has responded to the survey will be contacted in May to confirm the training planned and next steps. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact me at  desc@craigalmond.org.uk.

Kind Regards,

David Newton
