Arts Award: Debate.

Many UK theatre’s and drama schools run summer schools and workshops for young people. Companies such as the National Youth Theatre, Riding Lights, LAMDA, Central School of Speech and Drama…. The list goes on!!

However, with money being a tight squeeze, why are these courses so expensive? To me it seems that drama schools are only advertising courses to the young people from privileged backgrounds and many of these institutions are based in London which may deter young people from the North from applying. If young people must travel, it is not only the cost of the course, but also have to factor in travel, accommodation, food and other expenses. Organisations such as the National Youth Theatre and Drama Schools charge students an audition/interview fee of upwards of £40 or more just to be seen. This does not guarantee students a place on the course which alone are a substantial amount of money. I am from a working-class background and have been put off from the high prices of these courses. I firmly believe there needs to be more done for young people to get involved in courses and workshops and not be put off from seeing theatre or taking part in summer courses because of the high price tag and because of location.
