Survey of pilots

The European Commission has appointed Ricardo Energy & Environment ( to carry out a study to explore the employment and working conditions of aircrews in the European and international aviation market. The study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the different forms of employment of aircrews, clarify the nature and extent of use of atypical forms of employment and their implications on working conditions.

It should also help understand how the existing EU and national social rules cover the activities of aircrews and identify any legal challenges in protecting this category of highly mobile workers.

This survey targets pilots working for EEA-licensed airlines operating in the European Economic Area (EEA) and beyond. It includes questions asking for information and views in relation to key issues that are relevant to the study. Both EEA and non-EEA nationals are covered by the survey.

The survey is structured according to the following topics:

1.     Background information (Section 1)

2.     Employment relationship (Section 2)

3.     Working conditions and training (Section 3)

4.     Taxes and social security (Section 4)

5.     Other issues (Section 5)

All information provided in the survey will be treated as confidential. Any information provided will only be used for the purposes of the study and will not be shared with any other organisation. Ricardo complies with the applicable legislation concerning data protection and has in place structures to ensure that all data remain confidential.
