Share your views on infrastructure decarbonisation in the region.

The South West Infrastructure Partnership (SWIP) is working with the Institution of Civil Engineers South West to establish the key challenges facing the region, as we adapt and reduce carbon emissions in the period between now and 2050.

These questions are designed to inform a vision for South West infrastructure over the forthcoming decades. Answers should be given for South West England.

Issues that are largely not under the control of the South West, such as aviation and commercial shipping, are excluded.

Please help us by completing this short survey and sharing it with your network.

For more information about the survey and the South West Vision project, please email: ice.southwest@ice.org.uk

Question Title

* 1. Is your work or activity connected to infrastructure in the South West?

Question Title

* 2. Which net zero technologies do you think are most likely to be implemented in the South West between now and 2050?
Please rank the list according to feasibility of adoption in the region, with the most likely first and the least likely last.

  1. Implementation of an EV charging network throughout the South West
  2. Reduction in energy demand from buildings
  3. Conversion of fossil fuelled heating systems to low carbon
  4. Use of hydrogen for “difficult to electrify” items such as HGV transport or industrial heat
  5. Use of hydrogen as a widespread substitute for gas
  6. Greater uptake of active travel modes, such as cycling and walking to reduce road traffic volumes
  7. Implementation of Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage
  8. Putting nature at the heart of infrastructure including natural carbon sequestration
  9. Transition of railways from diesel to electric (including hybrid battery/OHL)
  10. Investing in new digital infrastructure to reduce the need for travel and enable economic growth

Question Title

* 3. Which of the following do you believe to be the greatest barriers to achieving net zero by 2050?
Rank in order of importance, where the first ranked item represents the greatest barrier.

  1. National Government policy
  2. Local Government policy
  3. Behavioural change to reduce emissions
  4. The cost of transition to a net zero society
  5. Collaboration between different infrastructure sectors
  6. Acceptance of the urgency of change
  7. Lack of political regional leadership on net zero transition planning

Question Title

* 4. Which areas do you think you would be able change in your own life to reduce emissions?
Tick all that apply.

Question Title

* 5. When considering your car usage, what will your next vehicle be?

Question Title

* 6. Finally, in your work as an infrastructure professional, or any work associated with infrastructure, what are the most important drivers?
Rank the following items in order of importance. All are important, but we are seeking to understand which items drive outputs.

  1. Budget
  2. Programme
  3. Compliance with Specification
  4. Reduction in carbon emissions (compared with standard practice)
  5. Consideration of suitability of the infrastructure over the asset’s design life
  6. Future maintenance and operational requirements of infrastructure over the asset’s design life

Question Title

* 7. Is there anything else you would like to add?

We are particularly keen to hear about any case studies of infrastructure decarbonisation in the South West region.

Please use the text box below to share further feedback.

Question Title

* 8. We appreciate the time you have taken to complete this survey.
