Under the influence of thyroid stimulating hormone, the thyroid gland produces a hormone called thyroxine.  When thyroxine levels are low, this can lead to complications in pregnancy and can affect the health of the baby.

Sometimes, when the thyroid gland is not working as efficiently, more thyroid stimulating hormone is needed to produce the necessary amounts of thyroxine – a condition which is known as compensated hypothyroidism or mild thyroid deficiency. Their thyroxine levels may be normal, but they have higher levels of the stimulating hormone. It is unclear whether women with this condition need additional thyroxine tablets in order to make their babies healthier.
