Brentwood Borough Council have produced an Environment Strategy for consultation with a range of stakeholders. The aim of the strategy is to help identify actions needed to achieve the council’s goal of becoming a carbon neutral borough by 2040. Key themes of the strategy include transport, air quality, built environment, natural environment, waste, energy, and behavioural changes. The strategy for consultation can be viewed here.

Scientists and our government agree that climate change is happening and is due to human activity. This includes global warming and greater risk of flooding, droughts and heat waves both globally and locally in the Brentwood Borough.

The world around us is changing. As the Earth’s surface warms, many other climate changes are also occurring:
  • warming oceans
  • melting polar ice and glaciers
  • rising sea levels
  • more extreme weather events
Scientists believe the increase in greenhouse gases is mainly due to:
  • burning of fossil fuels such as gas, coal and oil for energy and transport
  • agriculture and deforestation as natural habitats are swept away to grow food for growing populations
  • the manufacture of cement, chemicals and metals to support our industrial societies
The Paris climate conference (COP21) in December 2015 adopted the first-ever universal global climate deal to limit global warming to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursue efforts towards limiting to 1.5°C.

This questionnaire is to give people living and working within our borough a voice and a say in the development of our environment strategy.

Approximately 18% of greenhouse gas emissions in the UK originated from the business sector in 2020 (https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/1051408/2020-final-greenhouse-gas-emissions-statistical-release.pdf). Brentwood Borough Council are keen to engage with businesses operating within the borough to hear their thoughts on our environment strategy, and how the council may be able to support local businesses to achieve our goal of carbon neutrality by 2040.
