Questionnaire for men who have been affected either directly or indirectly by a cancer diagnosis |
Welcome to My Survey
WHY is a charity providing free emotional/psychological support through professional counselling for anyone who has been affected by a diagnosis of cancer or another life threatening condition. WHY have noticed that the majority of people accessing their services are female, and therefore, my research will be aimed at finding out the reasoning behind why men may/may not choose to use the counselling services provided to them.
What is this study about?
I am looking for individuals to take part in a 23-item questionnaire. This questionnaire will involve rating statements on a 5-point likert scale which focuses on your experience of cancer. In particular, it will focus on your experience with the emotional/psychological support services available to you. I am interested in why/why not you chose to use support services. I am also interested in gaining insight into how these services could be improved to better suit your needs.
What would I need to do?
I would like you to fill out the 23-item questionnaire either electronically via the survey link or using a paper copy, whichever you would prefer. The questionnaire will ask you to respond to statements on a 5-point likert scale whereby 1 = strongly disagree, 2 = disagree, 3 = neither agree nor disagree, 4 = agree and 5 = strongly agree. The survey will look at whether you have received psychological/emotional support, your awareness of the services available to you and your personal preference and feelings surrounding what type of support is available and what type of support you would wish to receive should you require it.
Do I have to take part?
Taking part in this research is entirely voluntary, and you are free to make your own choice about whether you want to participate. If you agree to take part, you can choose not to answer any questions that you do not want to and you are free to withdraw at any time.
What will happen to the information I provide?
Any potentially identifying details, including your name, will not be asked for in the questionnaire and therefore, your identity kept anonymous. The questionnaire information and website recording will not be linked to any contact details that you provide and will be stored separately so you cannot be identified. WHY have a secure shared drive which is backed up daily from their IT company which is where the data will be stored. Any paper documents e.g. consent forms, and questionnaires will be saved in a locked cabinet. Any written notes will be scanned into their computer system and saved securely there and then any paper copies of things can be shredded, of which they have a secure mechanism of disposing of confidential waste.
Once the project is completed, the information you have given to me will be kept safely by the University of Bath. If you give your consent, it may be used by other genuine researchers, with the University of Bath’s approval, under the strict rules governing the confidentiality of your information. So again, your name, or any material that might identify you, will never be used or given to anyone.
What will happen to the results of this research?
What you tell me will inform WHY’s research on why men may chose/not chose to use their services. This information can then be used to help improve the services they provide, and perhaps, make these services more ‘male-friendly’ if necessary. I may use extracts taken from what you have told me, however these would not identify you to anyone. The findings of the research may also be published in research journals or used in presentations. If you would like to be sent a summary of the findings, we can arrange for this.
