Outline

The Payroll Administrator Apprenticeship is live and approved for delivery on the Institute for Apprenticeships’ Website.  This is a major development for the payroll profession and marks the advent of a new payroll qualification at level 3.

The fact that this apprenticeship is level 3 is important.  Whilst no payroll department operates the same and the payroll administrator may be the only payroll professional in the organisation, this qualification is designed as an entry level to the profession, building the knowledge, skills and behaviours for progression within it.  As such, successful completion of the apprenticeship qualification may lead to roles at a higher level, for example, a team leader, supervisor or payroll manager.

It is important that the Payroll Administrator Apprenticeship is aligned with the professional bodies that will offer membership / recognition at this level and who offer the opportunity for progression within the industry.  As such, the Trailblazer group that developed the apprenticeship is pleased that the Global Payroll Association and the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals have agreed to align levels of membership with the apprenticeship.  We are seeking the payroll industry’s opinions on which other professional bodies should also be included in the Standard.  As such, we have defined the term ‘professional body’ and being an organisation that:

  - Is recognised by employers

  - Is representative of the whole or parts of the payroll profession (i.e. specific sectors, employer size etc)

  - Offers individual professional registration or membership at competency levels (i.e. not a subscription to an industry magazine or training portfolio)

After this short survey, the Trailblazer will approach the professional bodies and ask if they want to be included in the Payroll Administrator Standard and can align a level of their membership with this level 3 apprenticeship.
