The Royal Society of Biology is seeking confidential nominations for its next President of Council. We are not asking for your name as nominee, and there is no  expectation that your nominations should be contacted by you beforehand.

Nominations will be considered by the RSB Nominations Committee in mid-February 2021, and the shortlist will be formally discussed at the next RSB Council meeting on 10th March, after which the selected candidate will be approached by the Honorary Secretary. For this reason, nominations are required by midnight on 31st January 2021.

The term of President lasts for four years, and further detail on duties and responsibilities is included below, and in the Job Description and Person Specification document. Please nominate yourself below, or confidentially nominate someone else who meets the  below criteria.

If you wish to nominate more than one person, please complete a seperate nomination for each.

The process
At this stage we are simply looking for names, and a link to an online professional profile for your nominee.

The President will have already been awarded, or will be awarded Fellowship of the Society. Honorary Fellowship can be awarded where appropriate.

The role will formally commence from May 2022, (following annoucement at the RSB Annual General Meeting) and the successful applicant will act as President-elect until this time. While there is no requirement for the President-elect to attend quarterly Council meetings, they may be invited to attend, if appropriate, by the incumbent towards the end of their term of office.

Nominations should be submitted before midnight on 31st January 2021.

The President's role
The President is an elected officer of the Royal Society of Biology and the Chair of Council. The Society is looking to appoint a new President-elect from May 2021, who will come into the role of President in May 2022 and serve a four year term to May 2026.

The President provides leadership to Council, enabling the Trustees to fulfil their responsibilities for the overall governance and strategic direction of the Royal Society of Biology. The President plays an integral role in ensuring that appropriate decisions are correctly made including developing the Royal Society of Biology's strategic aims, objectives and goals in accordance with its Royal Charter, Bylaws and other legal and regulatory guidelines.

The President sets the conditions for the overall board and the individual effectiveness of Trustees, and establishes clear expectations concerning the Royal Society of Biology's culture, values and behaviour, leading Council in ensuring that these are embedded and enforced.

The President will work in partnership with the chief executive to ensure that Trustee decisions are acted upon and the charity is managed responsibly. The President and CEO should fully understand the difference between the role the Council plays in governance, developing and agreeing the strategic direction of the Royal Society of Biology and that of the Senior Leadership Team in applying that strategy to day-to-day operations.

The President-elect has no formal duties and would not sit on Council until they take up the role of President in May 2022.
