The Welsh Government is consulting on plans to exempt care leavers from paying council tax.
Having previously encouraged local authorities to exempt care leavers using existing discretionary powers, the consultation looks at formalising discretionary relief on a statutory basis.
Care leavers are a vulnerable group, for whom the transition to adulthood can be especially challenging.
Currently the proposed exemptions would be for care leavers between 18 and 24, with council tax due at 25, beginning in the 2019-2020 financial year. You can find full details of the consultation at https://beta.gov.wales/council-tax-exemptions-care-leavers.
