The UK Working Group on NCDs is a network of over 20 UK-based national and international NGOs and research organisations, which work together to draw attention to the urgent need to address the burden of non-communicable diseases as an international development priority.
The UK Working Group on NCDs was founded in early 2018 to advocate for strong UK government representation at the United Nations High-level Meeting on NCDs. Most recently, the Working Group has pivoted its attention to the clear links between Covid-19 and chronic conditions, acting as a focal point for information-sharing between its member organisations.
The UK Working Group on NCDs is greatly concerned about the support for people living with non-communicable diseases (PLWNCDs) and their access to quality health care wherever they live in the world. While some countries may have effective health care systems that ensure PLWNCDS have access to all medical services they need – including access to diagnostics, medication, rehabilitation and palliative care – in many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), PLWNCDs struggle to pay for their care out of their own pockets, often driving them to poverty.
As two PLWNCDs (one in the UK and the other in Kenya), the two consultants working on this report realise the vast disparities that exist in health care systems across the world. We hope to highlight some of these in the report and webinar that this survey will inform. The report will be shared widely including with relevant UK policy makers.
This work is funded through financial support from the NCD Alliance.
The report and webinar will include a focus on:
• The context for NCDs as a development issue
• The historical (lack of) emphasis by the UK government on funding NCD efforts
·       Recent changes in UK development aid; both funding and structure
·       The challenge and opportunity afforded by Covid-19 to bring NCDs firmly within health- systems strengthening
• Addressing issues on building back better/fairer, resilience and recovery, and the need to continue and increase investment in NCDs as part of international aid.
The survey should take about 15–20 minutes to complete We would be very grateful for your help – please complete as much as you are able.
