Introduction: about the survey

ACEVO (Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations, registered charity no. 1114591) and Voice4Change England (registered charity no. 1140624) are carrying out research to understand what people connected to charities think about race equality, diversity and inclusivity in the charity sector.

Please respond today and tell us about your experiences and opinions. Early responses are appreciated.

About the survey

This survey is designed to be completed by people:

- classified as Black, Asian and Minoritised Ethnic. (In census terms the BAME category covers everyone outside the category 'White British'. Groups classified as BAME include people identifying as Arab, Latinx, Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Chinese, people of multiple ethnic backgrounds, African, Caribbean, Irish, Gypsy or Irish Traveller).
- who, in the last five years, have worked for any length of time as interns, employees, volunteers, associates/freelancers, or trustees in registered charities in England and Wales.

This survey is about:

- 'Mainstream' charities - those whose staff and trustees can be from any ethnicity, e.g. as with most cancer, homeless or international development charities.
- Charities mandated to be led by particular population groups, but not based on ethnicity, e.g. charities led by and for women or LGBTQI people.

This survey is not about:

- Social purpose organisations that are not registered charities;
- Registered charities in England and Wales mandated to be led by particular BAME populations, e.g. Jewish, Muslim or Caribbean welfare charities, as these are different when it comes to issues of racial diversity.
