Safety in Finsbury Park - Consultation

The Friends of Finsbury Park held a general meeting on March 27 2018 to discuss the issue of park security and the safety of park users. There was a good attendance of local residents and stakeholders, including representatives of local Police and other relevant professionals.

After a long discussion, with helpful contributions from Police and workers with homeless people, the following concerns were expressed, often vigorously, and with many anecdotes as illustration:

  • Drug dealing. This was of great concern. Members gave examples of time and place, indicating that dealing is rife at all times, with a perceived increase in activity at big events and festivals. Police involvement has some effect but gives only brief respite. Dealers have the upper hand.
  • Personal safety. There seems to be minimal presence now of park staff and Police. Members expressed anxiety about using the park, especially late in the day. The general state of the park indicates a lower than necessary employment of gardeners.
  • Lighting and locking the park. There was a widespread view that lighting is inadequate when the park is in use after dark, especially now that it is no longer locked at night. At the same time, there were concerns about the adverse effects of artificial light on wild life.
  • Rough sleepers. There is gang violence against rough sleepers in the park.
  • Vehicular traffic in the park is increasingly dangerous. Speed limits are often not observed. It would be helpful to have clearly marked cycle lanes.

Following an environmental audit of the park, the police have proposed a number of recommendations to the Council for making the Park a safer place. We would like to hear from local residents and park users to know which measures for improving safety in the Park they would support. We would be grateful, therefore if you could help us by filling in the brief 2-minute survey below.
