Hello!

509 Arts invites you to contribute a memory to On Reflection - our upcoming exhibition at the Peter Scott Gallery.

How are you doing? What's on your mind?

Trump. The Miners' Strike. Tiananmen. Punk. Rationing. Partition. The 1966 World Cup. Diana. The Millennium. The Mars Rover. Brexit. Boris. Climate Change. COVID.

Things happen, don't they? Some things are so big they make the headlines everywhere. Some happened recently, some ages ago. They are part of a shared cultural memory.

Then there are personal memories that are particular to you. Things you'll never forget, like your earliest memory, something unexpected, something that shocked you, something dear to your heart, something you did or something you said. Maybe it's a memory you share with your family, your community or everyone in your town.

It might be a small thing that will stay with you forever, a memory that no one else knows about or a memory of an amazing person or a special place. Or maybe something else entirely.

509 Arts is exploring ageing and mortality. Al Dix, the company's Artistic Director is 74, and On Reflection looks at the connections between personal memory, the passage of time and the headline events that shape cultures. It's coming to Lancaster Arts' Peter Scott Gallery at Lancaster University in March and we will build an interactive ticker-tape tunnel that combines collected stories, Al's own recollections and the big headlines of the past 74 years. On Reflection started life through a collaboration  with Theatre in the Mill at Bradford University, and is opening at the Peter Scott Gallery on the 15th March.

This is your chance to share your memories for the exhibition. You don't need to write a book. It doesn't matter where in the world you are or how old you are. If you share a few sentences that speak of your own special experiences, they will become part of On Reflection.

Take a couple of minutes to collect your thoughts and reflect on what memories from your past have stayed with you, and when you are ready, click next to continue.
