(IMPORTANT: the term ‘Black’ is used in its political sense: to denote a solidarity between Asian, African, Caribbean and all people of colour who identify with this political ‘Blackness’. It was first used by White people to describe colonised, enslaved or indentured Asian and African people as a derogatory comparison to White. It was reclaimed in Britain as part of the struggle of working-class African-Caribbean and Asian communities against racism and imperialism in the 70s. NEU Black educators have fought to assert unity based on an understanding of the origins of racism and the politics of colour which has persisted to disproportionately discriminate against and marginalise Asian, African and African-Caribbean people.)
