Your feedback on a Private Member's Bill to amend the HFE Act is needed

Siobhain McDonagh MP's Parliamentary Bill to amend the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act is focused on continuing to improve IVF safety and increase treatment effectiveness in the long term. Specifically, the Bill is looking to ensure that the impact of drugs (licensed and unlicensed) being prescribed to women during IVF are properly monitored. The Bill anticipates that better data collection and monitoring should improve the evidence base for IVF treatments; ultimately leading to more effective treatment (more successful pregnancies). It should also reduce the likelihood of women suffering negative health risks, for example Ovarian Hyper Stimulation Syndrome (OHSS), as a result of IVF treatment.

The Bill recognises that there is no centralised monitoring of drugs and dosages prescribed to women during IVF treatment currently in the UK. Furthermore, that the HFEA registry is not currently linked with hospital, cancer, birth and death registries. Without this data, it is harder to build an accurate knowledge base on the short- and long-term impact IVF on the growing number of women undergoing treatment.

Your feedback and expertise is highly appreciated. The Bill preparatory work is collaborative and iterative in nature. This is an opportunity to influence it prior to its Second Reading on 8th March. We look forward to hearing from you. Thank You.
