Dear Doctor,

We recognise that every trainee has been affected in some way by the COVID-19 pandemic whether that be in a professional or personal manner. There has been a significant change to surgical services and the clinical working environment. Trainees are being redeployed and working outside their usual scope of practice. The joint letter from ASiT and the 15 surgical trainee speciality associations regarding the impact of COVID-19 vowed to closely monitor its impact on trainees and training. During and after the COVID-19 crisis has settled, real-world data will be a powerful and essential tool to advocate for trainees and influence training during the recovery phase.

The COVID-STAR Collaborative including The Association of Surgeons in Training (ASiT), Association of Otolaryngologists in Training (AOT), Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Fellows in Training (OMFS FiT), British Neurosurgical Trainees’ Association (BNTA), BAUS section of Trainees (BSoT), The Dukes’ Club, The Herrick Society, The Mammary Fold, Plastic Surgery Trainees Association (PLASTA), Rouleaux club, Roux group, The Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery (trainee group) and Trainees in Paediatric Surgery (TRIPS) have come together to best represent the voice of surgical trainees. We have designed this survey with speciality specific components to capture valuable information on the impact this time period has had on trainees and to collect information which will inform discussion on how we are trained going forward.

Thank you for participating in this pan-grade, pan-speciality survey, and supporting this important initiative.
