General practice- The impact of key documents on culture and working patterns

Three key documents have been published in 2019 (NHS Long Term Plan, The GP Partnership Review and the GP Contract). These create a new vision for Primary Care in the NHS.

How does the GP workforce view these changes and what is the impact at an individual and a practice level?

This survey has been created to collate your current feelings and thoughts on the future of Primary Care. It will be used to help influence decision makers and policy-makers moving forwards.

Thank you your taking the time to complete it,

Dr Nigel Watson

Independent Chair of the GP Partnership Review

A brief summary of the key documents of 2019:

NHS Long-Term Plan:
The NHS long-term plan sets a strategic direction with an increased investment in general practice and  community based care.  The plan highlights issues with workforce, NHS funding and suggests service reform which focuses on health prevention and addressing inequalities to improve the quality of care and health outcomes.  It also proposes legislative change as well as suggestions for digital and technology advances.

GP Partnership Review:
An independently led review on the current partnership model of general practice. The key recommendations focused on addressing workforce and workload issues and also reducing the financial risk for GP partners to encourage and retain GPs in substantive roles.

GP Contract:
Key changes are the introduction of state backed indemnity scheme and formation of Primary Care Networks (PCNs).  There is also PCN DES funding for expansion of the non-GP workforce over the next 5 years.  A focus on quality of care with QOF changes and increased access to IT and digital resources for practices.
