Introduction

The Silver Task Force of the W3C Accessibility Guidelines Working Group is researching requirements for the next generation W3C Accessibility Guidelines. You are invited to take part in a diary study investigating how the W3C’s Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 is used on a day-to-day basis. Taking part is entirely voluntary and you are free to withdraw at any time.

What is the purpose of this study?

The purpose of this study is to evaluate how usable WCAG 2.0 is to web developers by examining how it is used on a day-to-day basis. The study will explore the effectiveness of WCAG 2.0 in supporting web developers to create and evaluate accessible websites.

Why have I been invited?

You have been invited to participate in this study because you are a web developer or work in a role that involves creating websites.

If I agree to take part, what do I have to do?

You will initially complete a short survey which collects information about you and your occupation.

Then, for a period of two weeks, you will complete a short online form every time you use WCAG 2.0 as part of your day-to-day activities. The form asks a number of questions about your use of WCAG 2.0, including: what prompted you to use WCAG 2.0 on this occasion; what information you were looking for (and whether you found it); how useful and understandable you found the information; and what aspects of WCAG 2.0 helped or hindered you.

At the end of the two weeks, you will be asked to take part in a final telephone interview to summarise your experiences and gain your overall impressions of WCAG 2.0.

Can I be identified from the information I supply?

All data gathered will be anonymised (using unique ID numbers) and treated confidentially. The final telephone interview will be recorded for research purposes, but you will still retain your anonymity. You will not be identified when this data is shared, described or interpreted.

Your data will be stored securely on a password protected computer. Only members of the Silver Task Force will have access to the data.

What if there is a problem?
