NHS Shetland would like to find out more about how services for families could be improved. We would particularly like to hear about services who provide early years advice and advice for leading a healthy lifestyle for the whole family.
In this survey we would like to hear your experiences and collect feedback to help improve services and support for families in Shetland. Particularly where services could provide support and/or advice on healthy lifestyle and making healthy changes as a family.
This survey is split into 3 sections:
Section 1: During pregnancy and the early years (ages 0-5 yrs).
Section 2: Challenges to living a healthy lifestyle.
Section 3: Your experiences with the Child Screening Process.

The survey contains a mix of tick box and comment box answers, taking approximately 10-15 mins to complete.

The early years are an important part of child development and can have a long-term influence on health. Habits formed in these early years are more likely to stick with us, so by developing healthy habits we are given the best start in life.

For children to be healthy and happy they need to develop well, grow well and feel well. Our lifestyle and daily habits can have a really positive impact on our health as we are growing and developing. Our lifestyle is made up of lots of different factors, for example our eating, sleeping and activity habits; how we spend our ‘off’ time and family time – the list goes on!

Considering the current climate we are aware that there may be additional worries that families may be facing. The following question is to have a better understanding of the financial worries on families in order to make available appropriate support/advice from our Child Health Services.

Section 3 Your experience with the Child Screening Programme.

The ‘National Child Monitoring Surveillance System’ is a Scotland-wide programme which measures school age children at Primary 1, Primary 7 and Secondary 3. This is also called Child Screening. Height and weight measurements are taken at each point in a child’s development.

If your child has been at a Shetland school during the above years, you may have received written communication regarding the programme. This may have included information on your child’s height, weight and Body Mass Index (BMI).

We appreciate weight is a personal and sensitive topic to discuss, particularly when this relates to ourselves or our family. In this section we would like to understand your experiences with the above programme and how we can best discuss weight in a sensitive and supportive manner with families.
