Children, young people, their families and local professionals have had a lot to say about mental health services in recent years. By mental health services, we mean any professional or organisation that is there to help young people with their wellbeing- this could be a school nurse, counsellor, psychiatrist, psychologist, teacher, or support worker.

The NHS, Council and local services have listened to what has been said and have started to make some changes to improve services for the better. Each year we like to tell you a bit about what has happened so far and find out what you think. This survey is anonymous and should only take 10-15 minutes. We would really appreciate your time in filling it in. The results will be published later this year in our refreshed Local Transformation Plan at www.traffordccg.nhs.uk/publications
Thanks!

We have bought a new service to provide support to young people aged 5-12 years through group sessions looking at coping with stress and promoting emotional wellbeing. This service will also provide sessions to families to support emotional difficulties in their children.

We have brought Kooth into Trafford, which is a confidential, online, anonymous counselling service open 365 days a year up to 10pm for young people aged 11 to 18 years.

Question Title

* 4. You Said
"We want to book appointments with school nurses directly"

Young people were concerned about how they could book an appointment with a school nurse in confidence. This can be done direct through drop-in sessions in schools or through Facebook messenger.

Question Title

* 5. You Said
"It is still difficult to get information and know what services are out there"

We Did
A lot of work has been done on Trafford’s directory of support, with a new page for mental health services ready to be launched and a lot of work behind the scenes to make sure that when you search for a service the right support comes up.

Question Title

* 6. You Said
"It is still difficult to get information and know what services are out there"

We Did
Trafford Youth Cabinet has helped us to design a flyer for young people explaining the main services that are out there for mental health. This flyer will also be useful for professionals to use.

Question Title

* 7. You Said
"Waiting times are still too long for mental health services"

We Did
We know that waiting times are still too long in Trafford. The government will be introducing some standards around waiting time which our services will need to follow. There has been a lot of work this year in reviewing how Healthy Young Minds (CAMHS) operate and the roles of their staff to ensure that waiting times are brought down as much as possible. It is difficult as the number of children and young people referred to the service is constantly rising. Healthy Young Minds(CAMHS) have recruited new staff, introduced more group sessions and put new systems in place to bring down the waiting times.

Question Title

* 8. You Said
"Professionals can lack confidence in dealing with young people with mental health issues"

We Did
Earlier in 2017, a number of training sessions were held for professionals around key areas such as anger management, self-harm, eating disorders and anxiety. There is also free online training on mental health which has been promoted out to schools and will be promoted to other professionals shortly (www.minded.org.uk).  Young people wanted training for school staff and a conference is planned for Trafford schools in October 2017 around mental health, featuring a workshop on gender issues as requested by young people.

Question Title

* 9. You Said
"Professionals can lack confidence in dealing with young people with mental health issues"

We Did
An audit also took place in August 2017 to find out about professional’s experience and knowledge around mental health and identify where our increased investment around training should be used. This information will lead to a full workforce plan for Trafford so we can predict how many staff and what level of skills we will need for the future.

Question Title

* 10. You Said
"Improvements are needed around out of hours services"

We Did
A large project is taking place across Greater Manchester to ensure that the right support is available for children or young people in an emergency. This means that support will be available, wherever you are, no matter what time of day or night it is, within two hours. It will also mean that there will be more crisis cafes, resource libraries, drop ins, one stop shops, telephone advice and online support.

Question Title

* 11. You Said
"Transitions between services needs to improve"

We Did
There is currently a group of senior staff looking at how to improve the transition from children to adult services- this is a big priority for Trafford.

We have also started to look at different conditions and how services can work better together and be clear on who undertakes what role. This has been done for children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is currently being worked on for Autism and is planned for autumn 2017 for children with anxiety, depression and mood disorders. We are talking to Talkshop, 42nd Street and Healthy Young Minds (CAMHS) about how they can work closer together.
