Post-Workshop Survey

The PROCEED workshop has been held in Vienna on April 6 and 7, 2019. Its objectives were to initiate concepts and define new goals for ECORD participation in a future international scientific ocean drilling programme to be developed beyond 2023. A special emphasis has been given to new science frontiers and technological developments in a multiple drilling platform approach.

In addition to the outcomes of the PROCEED workshop, we are also asking the ECORD community to complete the following survey, in which we are asking what you consider the scientific and technological challenges of scientific ocean drilling to be beyond 2023.

We need your contribution - Please submit your responses as soon as possible and, in any case, before May 10, 2019.

This survey has been organised by the PROCEED Scientific Committee, and is hosted by the British Geological Survey, an ECORD Science Operator partner and a subsidiary of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). The BGS will collect and securely store all survey information submitted, and provide it to the PROCEED organisers for the sole purpose of producing the PROCEED White Paper. Information submitted will not be disclosed to any other third parties, and will deleted after the White Paper is produced.

The future of IODP Beyond 2023

The Science Plan for the International Ocean Discovery Program, Illuminating Earth's Past, Present, and Future, was developed to guide multidisciplinary international collaboration on scientific ocean drilling during the period 2013-2023. It was crafted on behalf of earth, ocean, atmospheric, and life scientists at the request of science funding agencies from 24 nations, representing approximately 75% of the world's economy.

The 2013-2023 Science Plan comprises 14 Challenges under four themes:

A.  Climate and Ocean Change – Reading the past, informing the future.
B.   Biosphere Frontiers – Deep Life and environmental forcing of evolution.
C.   Earth Connections – Deep processes and their impact on Earth’s surface environment.
D.   Earth in Motion – Processes and hazards on human time scales.

To define the scientific goals of scientific ocean drilling beyond 2023 we need to assess the progress IODP has made towards addressing the 14 current IODP Challenges, and the extent to which the science plan needs to be revised to accommodate new and emerging Challenges. We also need to ensure that the IODP infrastructure is appropriate to address these future scientific challenges. Please therefore consider your responses to the following questions carefully.

Responses to questions 9 to 14 are limited to 3000 characters (roughly 500 words).

Question Title

* 10. Looking beyond 2023, which current IODP science plan challenges need to be modified or expanded? Explain how and why.

Question Title

* 11. What new scientific challenges should be formulated in the next IODP science plan?

Question Title

* 12. What new drilling infrastructure (e.g. platform types, coring technologies, shipboard analytical facilities) will be needed to address these new or updated IODP challenges?

Question Title

* 14. With regards IODP management and operations, is there anything that has worked particularly well during the current phase of IODP? Explain why.

Question Title

* 15. What other innovations (e.g. changes to the IODP management/structure, operational processes or the proposal system) would improve future scientific ocean drilling? Explain why.

Question Title

* 16. Do you have any other comments from past experience (IODP or otherwise) that may help inform new operational approaches for a future scientific drilling program?
