Muchos Nachos at the Crown, Whyke Road, Chichester

The Crown Inn at 140 Whyke Road, also known as Muchos Nachos, is under threat. Last year the building's owner was keen to convert the pub into housing (without even telling the tenant). Chichester District Council turned down that planning application, and then the community got the council to list Muchos Machos as an "Asset of Community Value". This recognizes the importance of places like Muchos Nachos as not just a pub, but a community hub.

But that is not the end of the matter. The key point about "Community Asset" listing is that the community has the right to bid when the building next goes on sale. The owner has now put the building up for sale, and if we as a community group don’t put in an offer, we risk losing the "Community Asset" listing, which could make it easier to turn the pub into housing.

We believe the pub is worth saving – as an important local hub for meeting and communicating with each other. Much of the appeal of Whyke rests on its sense of community. We feel the Crown plays a role and could play an even bigger one in keeping that community spirit lively.

We have contacted the Plunkett Foundation, a charity that supports community-owned enterprises. The Foundation has been involved in projects throughout the country and has set up many co-operative pubs. They have agreed to give us some support and have offered to meet us to provide advice.

We now need to prepare an action plan. This questionnaire is the first step. We need to know your views. Do you consider the pub worth saving? If so, what changes would you like to see (if any)? In your answers, please be as honest and realistic as possible about your current and likely future use. Your response will be treated in confidence. It is entirely anonymous, unless you wish to add your name at the end.

Next steps:

We have booked the Scout Hall on Whyke Road for a public meeting to agree an Action Plan with the ambition of preserving The Crown as a community resource. That meeting will take place on Saturday 10th Feb at 11 am. Please do make every effort to attend.

Thank you.
