LGBT+ Careleavers Survey

The Care Leavers Association is a national user-led charity working to improve the lives of people who were in care as children.

Earlier this year the Care Leavers Association under took a national survey of the health of care leaves and adolescent looked after children. ( A report on this will be published later this year)

One of the many significant things to come out of this was that 14.5% of the respondents identified as LGBT+ (the rate in the general population is thought to 7%) so this twice that figure.

However some of the qualitative responses indicated that some LGBT+ care leavers did not feel supported or that they could come out while they were looked after (either foster care and or residential care)

The Care leavers Association and Three Circles Fostering is looking to do some work on better supporting the needs of LGBT+ looked after children and those who have left the care system.

Often people who identify as LGBT+ are vulnerable and care experience can exacerbate this.

We intend that the results of this survey will be used to make recommendations and better support the needs of LGBT+ looked after children and those who have left the care system.

We have already started to work with Designated Looked After Childrens Nurses in Greater Manchester to identify ways of how they can better support the needs of LGBT+ looked after children and those who have left the care system.

If you could complete all of these questions, it will be appreciated.

All responses will be treated with the strictest confidence and no details or identifying information will be held or shared with any other parties.

If you have any questions about this you can contact Jakeb Arturio Braden (Health Development Worker, Care Leavers Association) on 0161 637 5040, Jakeb.braden@careleavers.com
