Welcome to the EPSRC survey on gender diversity in our large by value grant portfolio

We welcome responses from all researchers in our community. This includes past and present grant holders, unsuccessful applicants and potential applicants who chose not to apply or have selected alternative funding mechanisms.

Building on the recent publication of harmonised UKRI diversity data, EPSRC have undertaken a detailed investigation focused on gender to better understand the portfolio that we support. We have published our findings in a report ‘Understanding our portfolio: a gender perspective’ which can be found here:

Underrepresentation of women in the engineering and physical sciences remains one of EPSRC’s largest EDI challenges, with gender diversity in our large grant portfolio an area of particular concern. While underrepresentation of women at senior levels within engineering and physical sciences is a known concern, the recent data investigation by EPSRC seeks to better understand the complexities involved, linking grant size by value to award rates across our standard grants and calls. Our aim in publishing our investigation is to share our findings with the wider engineering and physical sciences community, raise awareness of the trends that we see as a funder and promote discussion in the community to support changes across the sector. The style of the report is intended to support an open conversation with our community.

The purpose of this ‘have your say’ community engagement survey is to gather your reflections on the data, your views on potential causal factors and your experiences of applying for a large grant, to help us better understand the factors that influence the inclusion of researchers in our grant portfolio.

Your views are important to help us build knowledge and gather evidence to make informed strategic decisions. The survey is anonymous and all responses confidential. EPSRC will use the information from this survey to inform our next steps, with a view to take action to help to reduce barriers identified related to EPSRC opportunities and processes. We will share with you the findings of this survey in due course.

We are aware that due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic people will be juggling many different demands and therefore we are extending our engagement period to make sure we give the opportunity to engage with us to as wide a range of people that we can.
