These prestigious special categories are for the most deserving in our industry and you determine them. We've shortlisted the best of the best and now we need you to vote for the winners in 2019. We have 4 categories for which we need your vote. You have shown impeccable taste and judgement on previous years, voting If_Do, Jennifer Newman, Spacelab and Amanda Levete to the top spots last year. Your vote really does count to determine who most deserves to win this year.

Studio Shaw www.studioshaw.co.uk
Established in 2016, Studio Shaw work across sectors to produce flexible buildings that endeavour to be original in their design and use. Their recent work includes a cocktail bar-style co-working space for Kindred and a courtyard house in North London.

We Made That www.wemadethat.co.uk
Working solely for regional and local authority clients and third sector organisations, We Made That are architects and urbanists that seek to create rigorous, critically engaging contributions to the built environment. On Blackhorse Lane in East London, they reinvigorated streets with small-scale interventions such as a new civic clock and an improved wayfinding strategy.

PLYable www.plyable.co.uk
Founded in 2017 by architects Claire and Mags Margetts, and furniture designer Tom Ownsworth, PLYable is a design studio in Blyth, Northumberland that spans architecture, interior, furniture and product design. The products also inform ongoing research into how we both produce and inhabit space. The design for an innovative form of scooter, evolved into an investigation into the ever-agile workplace – using the scooter design as a seat for ‘standing tables’.

Twin sisters, one covering the discipline of architecture the other interior design, form Studio Mills, a multidisciplinary practice in South London. Combining their skills, they create beautiful spaces that work. They recently transformed a Victorian terrace in Walthamstow into a characterful office space for Together Design.

Yorgo Lykouria is an architect and designer with experience of high profile international projects and clients. Rainlight was founded in 2017 and focuses on product design for some of the world’s leading manufacturers, creating many award winning pieces for the likes of Okamura, Allsteel, Tecno and Scavolini.

SmithMatthias www.smithmatthias.com
Started by Jack Smith and Gemma Matthias, furniture designers who met at university, SmithMatthias is a London-based design studio. They recently radically transformed the pint glass design for Camden Town Brewery, creating a lower, wider proportioned glass.

Adam Nathaniel Furman www.adamnathanielfurman.com
Furman’s intensely decorated and often outré products and furniture take inspiration from his passionate exploration of the themes of Queerness, colour and ornament as a political-aesthetic project, with his objects being the embodiment of the diasporic, roaming cultures that surrounded him as a child in a culturally mixed household.

Yinka Ilori www.yinkailori.com
Ilori’s up-cycled vintage furniture takes inspiration from the traditional Nigerian parables and African fabrics that surrounded him as child. His work is playful and stimulating, exploring themes such as hope, sexuality and social class. In using found and discarded object, Ilori opposes ‘throwaway’ western cultures, instead using them to retell stories of his childhood.

Studio Myerscough www.studiomyerscough.com
Studio Myerscough creates vibrant, striking spaces that respond to people and place, from temporary bandstands to hospital interiors for Sheffield Children’s Hospital and the much-photographed permanent exhibition in the Design Museum. Myerscough’s background was in graphic design but her characteristic use of lettering and colour now shapes a practice that is far more expansive.

With offices in the UK, Germany and Latvia, Fletcher Priest work across urban design, architecture, interiors and research. They recently won planning permission for the highly contested Piccadilly Circus site, behind London’s iconic illuminated billboards. The layered proposal of offices, shops and apartments will form the new Piccadilly Lights district.

CADA Design www.cada.co.uk
CADA Design create food-led brands and spaces, through strategy, branding, interior design and delivery. Based in London for almost 30 years, and with a newly opened office in Hong Kong, most recently, CADA has been responsible for creating Aldi Local across London; Ichiba, Europe’s largest Japanese food hall at Westfield, London, and a 140,000 sq. ft. food hall for Lotte in Seoul, South Korea.

Having worked across retail, leisure, workplace and exhibition design since 2000, Shed Design have delivered projects in over 30 countries, specialising in branded interior design. Recently, they created a temporary store for the Pass On Plastic movement, with a custom wallpaper made up of images of plastics found in the sea.

Bennetts Associates www.bennettsassociates.com
Founded in 1987 by Denise and Rab Bennetts as they graduated together from Edinburgh University, Bennetts Associates have offices in London, Edinburgh and Manchester. They are recognised for their work in cultural institutions across the UK, including the renowned Storyhouse in Chester - a much loved theatre, cinema and library. They were recently selected to redevelop the Kings Theatre, Edinburgh.

As a small practice, softroom work across sectors, from exhibition design, to aircraft interiors, to housing. They design the V&A arts educations centre, transforming their facilities and widening their offering to younger generations. They are also designing interior spaces for the 'Scarlet Lady' – the first of three 110,000 ton ships for new cruise line Virgin Voyages.

* 4. Outstanding Lifetime Achievement

Frida Escobedo
In 2018, Escobedo became the youngest architect to be commissioned for the Serpentine Pavilion, producing a space that alluded to courtyards typically attached to houses in Mexico, with latticed cement walls. Her work is rooted in a social context, whether designing social housing, temporary interactive works, or a range of handcrafted obsidian vessels for drinking tequila.

Niall McLaughlin www.niallmclaughlin.com
McLaughlin specialises in highly crafted and intelligently detailed buildings across a broad range of typologies. Reflecting on how his own education inspired him, with tutors such as Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara, he believes that teaching and research must always remain central to architectural practice. His research into designing for dementia informed an installation at the Venice Biennale 2016, exploring the fears associated with dementia.

Sarah Wigglesworth www.swarch.co.uk
Wigglesworth founded her own practice in 1994, which has gone on to specialise in sustainable design across schools, residential and community spaces. As a Professor of Architecture at the University of Sheffield, Wigglesworth founded the PhD BY Design, influenced by her approach in practice, where research permeates the work. She led DWELL (Designing for Wellbeing in Environments for Later Life), researching the design of houses and neighbourhoods for older people.

Sadie Morgan www.drmm.co.uk
A founding director of dRMM, Morgan has become an increasingly influential voice in design advocacy, sitting on a number of government commissions and campaign pushing for a greater attention to design in infrastructural projects. She is chair of the Independent Design Panel for HS2, sits on the National Infrastructure Commission, is deputy chair of the Thames Estuary 2050 Growth Commission and is a Mayor’s design advocate for the Greater London Authority
