Proposed Year 9 intake and change of Published Admission Numbers (PAN)

It has been agreed that Derby Manufacturing UTC (DMUTC) will join the Sheffield UTC Academy Trust and will relaunch in November 2019. As part of this change, it is proposed that DMUTC will extend provision to Year 9 students and will also change Published Admission Numbers (PAN) for Year 10 and Year 12. Both of these represent significant developments and require evidence of support from all those who might benefit.  Your views are critical to establishing the way forward. We hope that you will be able to take a few minutes to answer the questions below. Every response received will help us to progress and also to make sure that plans for the relaunch of the new UTC are fit for purpose.

It is now proposed to admit students into Year 9 for reasons indicated in the accompanying briefing document on the website; in particular, to give students the best possible opportunity to progress and meet their targets over a three year period rather than just two years. This proposal does not entail expansion of the UTC.

Do you agree that Derby Manufacturing UTC should admit Year 9 students?

Question Title

* 4. UTCs offer distinctive technical and employer-based learning alongside core subjects at GCSE. Data collected in Sheffield showed that, where students’ progress had fallen behind in Years 7-9 in their previous school, on entering the UTC their progress accelerated when re-engaged by the technical learning and employer involvement. This was a significant contributing factor in deciding to admit Year 9 students at UTC Sheffield.

Do you think it will benefit students to start technical and employer-based learning earlier in Year 9, alongside other core subjects?

Question Title

* 5. Derby Manufacturing UTC centre is located close to main public transport links.

Do you think transport will be an issue for Year 9 students?

Question Title

* 6. Awareness raising and relevant Information, Advice and Guidance will be crucial for ensuring that appropriate Year 9 students benefit from this opportunity to attend Derby Manufacturing UTC. The recruitment, transition and induction processes that Derby Manufacturing UTC is planning to put in place, based on proven approaches adopted at Sheffield UTC Multi-Academy Trust, are set out in the consultation briefing document on the website.

Do you think that the proposed approaches for recruitment, transition and induction sound appropriate?
