INTRODUCTION

This survey is being conducted as part of a wider research project that is seeking to enhance the quality of legal advice and representation in the Youth Justice System (YJS). The work is funded by the Dawes Trust and is led by Just for Kids Law and the Institute for Crime & Justice Policy Research at Birkbeck, University of London.

The survey aims to better understand:
· What knowledge, skills and attributes criminal defence solicitors need to work effectively with child suspects and defendants;
· The extent to which solicitors have the requisite knowledge, skills, and attributes;
· Factors that support or undermine effective practice in the YJS;
· Impact on effective working of remote methods of legal representation;
· Interventions and additional training that could enhance the quality of solicitors’ work with child suspects and defendants.

The survey should take approximately 15 minutes to complete. It is anonymous: we do not ask for any names or contact details, and the survey does not track email or IP address. The anonymised survey data will be reported in a research report and presented to stakeholders, including the Ministry of Justice, Youth Justice Board, and Solicitors Regulation Authority.
