1. Introduction: about the survey

Home Truths 2 is the follow-up to the 2020 Home Truths report on racism in civil society. The new programme from the Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations (registered charity no. 1114591) and Voice4Change England (registered charity no. 1140624) will challenge and support mainstream civil society to take serious practical action on anti-racism and race equity. This e-survey will greatly help to inform the new work. Please complete today or no later than Monday 11 September 2023.

This survey is open to people who:

a) self-identify as one of the ethnicities included under the term Black and Minoritised (see below); and
b) who have worked for any period from 2018 onwards in ‘mainstream’ civil society (voluntary and community organisations) in England and/or Wales.

Note: By civil society, we mean not-for-profit organisations, e.g. charities. By mainstream we mean organisations not explicitly and identifiably led by and for Black or Minoritised populations. These include organisations led by no designated ethnic group or groups, such as those working on causes affecting broad populations, e.g., health, hunger or housing. It also includes organisations led by people with ‘protected characteristics’, outside ‘race’ and ethnicity, e.g., women, LGBTQI people and disabled people.

Definitions
The Black and Minoritised grouping covers everyone outside the category ‘White British’ (i.e., White English / Welsh / Scottish / Northern Irish). Groups classified as Black and Minoritised include people identifying as Asian / Asian British; Black / African / Caribbean / Black British; White Irish or Gypsy, Traveller or Irish Traveller; mixed or multiple ethnic groups; Arab or Latinx; or any other ‘non-White’ British category.

In the context of this survey, we define racism as a practice. Racism is institutionalised, flowing from normalised social rules and policies that enables and justifies harms to Black and Minoritised people. It can be delivered through the actions and inactions of leaders and decision-makers.

By anti-racism, we mean the practice of identifying and ending racism by changing the values, structures, social rules and actions that enable exploitation and racist outcomes.

By race equity, we mean the process of breaking the link between life outcomes and ‘race’ or ethnicity and ending racial disparities. Race equity builds on anti-racism and can mean treating people in an appropriate way, rather than the same way, in order to overcome inequitable outcomes.

This survey asks optional questions about people’s experiences of racism, which could be distressing or triggering should you chose to answer them.
