Introduction

Granton Castle Walled Garden is a 15th Century garden in North Edinburgh. In 2013, a group of local residents discovered this hidden gem and began a campaign to save the lost castle garden from redevelopment as housing. In April 2017, the Friends of Granton Castle Walled Garden gained access to the garden - since then they have been working with local volunteers to clear weeds and brambles, and begin replanting the garden. The group has big plans to develop the site as a community resource - a space for growing fresh fruit and vegetables, promoting health and wellbeing, celebrating local history, and providing a range of learning opportunities for local people.

The Friends of Granton Castle Walled Garden is working to secure a long-term lease from the Council and raise funds to further develop the garden for the benefit of local people. To do this, we are working on plans for the future of the garden, and conducting some research to inform a strong plan moving forwards. We are also planning to register as a charity (there will be a community vote on this at our AGM in May). We are keen that this project is genuinely led by local people, and want to hear what the community wants to see happening in the garden.

We would appreciate it if you would complete the questionnaire below. All information is gathered in the strictest confidence and should take no more than 10 minutes. Questionnaires can be completed online if you type this link into your browser (https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/GrantonWalledGarden).  Please give completed paper copies of the survey back to the garden, or drop them at North Edinburgh Arts.

Alternatively, you can bring them along to an event at the garden. We are being assisted in our research by consultants from Community Enterprise and so if you need any help or clarification, please call Molly or Douglas on 01506 862227.

There have been a range of proposals for the Walled Garden. Some of these will be easier to achieve in the short term, and others will take longer to develop. We want to make sure that the project is genuinely community led, so are asking local people to contribute to our ideas

Thinking about the physical spaces in the garden,  please select everything listed below that you would support or like to see (now or in future)

It is really important to us that Granton Castle Walled Garden is a community space that is genuinely accessible for all local people. We will be seeking funding to make sure that as much as possible of what we do is available for free (or very low prices), but we need to make sure that we can cover the costs of keeping the garden open.

We are currently thinking about how we could generate a small amount of income and want to understand what visitors to the garden might be willing to pay for (if they can afford to)
